An Unexpected Journey
Karen and Nigel married when both were in their early 40s. Because of an increased risk for older parents having a child with a disability, they chose adoption. In 2003 they traveled to China, adopting 11-month-old Olivia, and in 2006 adopted 11-month-old Chloe, born a girl. Olivia was diagnosed in second grade with autism. At age 11, Chloe identified as transgender and now goes by the name of Tyler.
Now in their early 60s, Karen and Nigel are raising Tyler, 13, and Olivia,16. Their lives are joyful, yet different, as Olivia’s transitions to and from daily activities, such as morning routines, meals, showers and bedtime can take inordinate amounts of time. They also worry about Olivia’s future and are looking for a place where Olivia can realize her dream of living on a farm, surrounded by the necessary professional supports as well as a supportive community.
“You think you are going to Italy and end in Holland, and it’s still beautiful, but not what you expected,” Karen Zeid says. “You love them no matter what.”
