Colorado AP Reporters and Editors group, second place, Beat Reporting: (Health). Feb. 27, 2009.
Each Story offers an unexpected and interesting angle on an important health issue. This reporter does much more than scratch the surface, she dives right in. The leads do a good job of drawing readers into the stories.
Colorado AP Reporters and Editors group, third place, Beat Reporting: (Food). Feb. 27, 2009.
This reporter gives readers intriguing approaches to the food beat. No “food of the week” for her. Linking food to family fun and family memories is a clever way to involve readers. The stories have interesting leads that are more than mere devices, they’re threads of interest interwoven throughout.
National Newspaper Association, first place, Best Performing Arts Story, Daily Division, “Leaving on a Jet Plane” . July 2007.
Thorough, frank feature about someone facing the challenges of succeeding as a songwriter. Skillful job capturing the work-a-day world life versus the artist's aspirations. Fine piece. April 21, 2006.
Colorado Press Association, first place, feature story. “True Grace.” Feb. 2005.
Society of Professional Journalists, first place, “A reader.” “The Living Fields.” May 2004. Judges’ comments: An effortless read by Glairon. She gets you with the first word and fails to let go until the final period. Nicely done.
Scripps Howard, Best of Scripps, enterprise report, “True Grace.” Judges’ comments: Susan Glairon and (photographer) Cliff Grassmick took on a story that many a newspaper would have ducked. They befriended a girl with a disfigured face who, as the headline writer ably put it, possesses “True Grace.” Their sensitive, but straightforward work captured the remarkable girl. Dec. 2003.
